However the individual will have no recollection of his or her past lives.

Very informative article and discussion - curious: What is the Hindu position on actual past-life recollections as detailed in other cultures/dogma? Fact, fiction or..?

For humans there is no recollection possible of past lives. But it is all there on "God's computer" and humans carry the baggage of past lives with them.
Today I am comfortably off being born in a well to do family. I have no way of knowing whether I was in a worst position in my earlier lives and am where I am because of my good deeds in earlier lives or I was in a better position in my earlier lives and am where I am because of my bad deeds in earlier lives. Religion teaches me not to worry about this but to do good deeds so that my next life will be an improvement.
There do appear stories of humans having recollections of past lives. These are at best misguided beliefs or at worst attempts to fraud. In Hindu mythology there are certain enlightened sages who have recollections of their past lives. But these are people who have transcended normal human behaviour and are special cases.
