» Feature Writer Harsh Nevatia - Diwali in the Hindu and Gregorian calendars

According to the Hindu calendar Diwali falls on the new moon day (15th day of the shukla paksha) of the month of Kartika every year. However it falls on different days according to the Gregorian calendar. In 2004 Diwali was on November 12. In 2005 it was on November 1. The date shifted 11 days backwards as explained in the blog. In 2006 it shifted backwards by a further 11 days and was celebrated on October 21. By this progression Diwali should be on October 10 in 2007. However 2007 has an extra month. Hence Diwali will fall on November 9. The sequence then repeats.
